Established in 1987, the Fund for the Environment has been a leader in the development and support of environmental nonprofits, primarily in Michigan. Support from the Fund helped in the early stages of the Michigan Environmental Council. Perhaps its biggest role was its collaboration with EarthShare, a national environmental organization. As EarthShare began to expand its engagement of state-based partners, the Fund became its partner in Michigan in its support of a network of Michigan environmental nonprofits. As the network of organizations expanded around the country, the Fund served as one of the leads in bringing organizations from 15 states together to affiliate with EarthShare. Over 20 years in partnership with EarthShare, the Fund raised more than $5 million supporting environmental organizations, both local and national, protecting the beauty and natural qualities of Michigan. Now that that affiliation is complete, the Fund has embraced new projects, programs, and opportunities.
